Quick Answer: How to Use an Industrial Peak Flow Meter and Reset the Reading

A peak flow meter captures the highest flow rate during a batch, CIP cycle, or gas purge. For Silver Automation Instruments models, press the PEAK button once to display the stored maximum, then hold the RESET key for three seconds to clear it. Always confirm the 4-20 mA HART signal has stabilised before recording a value.

Why a Peak Flow Meter Matters on the Plant Floor

Operators in food and beverage plants in Thailand often need to verify maximum rinse water velocity through a DN25 magnetic flow meter. They do not care about the real-time number only the highest spike that hit the pipe during a 20-second flush. An industrial peak flow meter stores that spike. It works with Coriolis, electromagnetic, vortex, and turbine flow sensors from Silver Automation Instruments. The meter constantly updates a peak register in the firmware. When system pressure jumps or a pump ramps up, the register captures the top flow rate in kg/h, m³/h, or l/min until someone resets it. This eliminates the guesswork of staring at a bouncing display.

Step 1: Confirm the Meter Is in Normal Run Mode

Look at the top left corner of the LCD. You should see RUN or a process value like 12.45 m³/h. If you see PROG or SET, press the ESC button once to back out. Many engineers skip this part and then wonder why the peak button does nothing. On a Silver Instruments electromagnetic flow meter installed at a paint factory in Nigeria, the screen stays in Run mode unless someone enters the password-protected menu.

Step 2: Read the Stored Peak Value

Press the PEAK key once. The display will blink once and show a value with a small PK icon on the right side. This number is the maximum flow rate since the last manual reset or power cycle. For a thermal mass flow meter measuring compressed air in a Mexican automotive plant, a reading of 340 Nm³/h tells the maintenance team that the ring line demand briefly jumped 18% above normal. Do not confuse this with the totaliser value. The peak is instantaneous flow, not accumulated volume.

Step 3: Interpret the Peak Value Before Resetting

Write the value down or log it via Modbus RTU. Peak data helps spot water hammer events or stuck check valves. In practice, a wastewater plant in Indonesia spotted a peak of 980 m³/h on a DN200 electromagnetic meter rated for 700 m³/h continuous. That single reading triggered a pump curve review and avoided impeller damage. If your Silver Instruments meter talks to a paperless recorder, check that the peak timestamp aligns with a pressure surge in the log. Most engineers cross-check this with a pressure transmitter reading, often a 4-20 mA signal from a separate PT100 or piezoresistive sensor.

Step 4: Reset the Peak Register

With the peak value still displayed, press and hold the RESET or CLR button. The factory default hold time is three seconds. Do not just tap it. The screen will flash CLR and the peak value drops to the current live flow rate. Release the button. The meter immediately starts capturing a new peak from that moment. In a batch chemical dosing skid running at 250 l/h with an oval gear flow meter, an operator resets the peak after every fill cycle to monitor dose accuracy. If the meter has dual peak registers for positive and negative flow, the reset clears both unless you set the menu to independent clear. This is common on bidirectional Coriolis meters measuring loading and unloading of tankers in the Middle East.

Step 5: Trigger a Breathing or Pressure Pulse Test Manually

Some processes exhibit a breathing effect slow pressure oscillations due to header valve modulation or thermal expansion in a long DN15 impulse line. To verify the peak meter captures these pulses, do a qui
