Key Parameters for a Reliable Output
Pipe size, liner material, electrode material, output signal, and power supply matter most. Most engineers skip the liner check. But the liner matters in dirty water. Use PTFE or PFA for aggressive fluids. Use hard rubber for raw water and slurry.
Output signal can be 4-20 mA HART, pulse, or RS485 Modbus. We often add a local display. A paperless recorder can store flow data for 30 days or more. For remote sites, a battery powered electromagnetic sensor is available. It can log data and send it through GPRS.
Fluid Presence Detection Without Extra Switches
Many installations still use a separate flow switch and a separate flow meter. That adds two pipe penetrations and two devices to calibrate. A flow water sensor with continuous output can do both jobs. Some models have a relay output that triggers when flow drops below a setpoint. You can set the cut off at 0.1 m/s or 0.3 m/s. This replaces a mechanical vane switch.
