Tools and Safety

You need a prover tank or master flow meter, a frequency counter, a stopwatch, a thermometer and a density cup for blended fuels. In hazardous areas use ATEX Zone 1 or Zone 2 rated test equipment. Do not open the meter electronics while power is live. Drain static charge before connecting test leads on a fuel skid.

Step by Step Calibration Procedure

First, record the current pulses per liter from the GPI display or configuration menu. Second, fill the system with the same hydrocarbon. Remove air bubbles. Air is the most common cause of unstable pulse output.

Third, run a known volume through the meter. Use a 200 or 500 liter prover tank if possible. Run at your normal loading rate. Stop the flow when the prover tank reaches its marked level.

Fourth, compare the meter reading to the prover volume. If the meter reads 515 liters and the prover volume is 500 liters, the meter is over reporting by 3 percent.

Fifth, calculate the new pulses per liter. The formula is below.

New pulses per liter = current pulses per liter x actual prover volume / meter reading

If the current value is 1,000 pulses per liter, the meter reading is 515 liters and the prover volume is 500 liters, the new value is 971 pulses per liter.

Use this formula every time. New K factor = old K factor x actual volume / indicated volume. If the meter under reports, the new K factor goes up. If the meter over reports, the new K factor goes down. This logic works for GPI digital meters, oval gear meters, turbine meters and Coriolis meters with pulse output.

Common Calibration Errors on Hydrocarbons

Do not use water to calibrate a hydrocarbon meter. Water has different surface tension and lubricity. A meter tuned on water can shift 1 to 4 percent on diesel. Always calibrate with the actual product or a fluid with similar viscosity.

Also watch back pressure. Light oils can form vapor when pressure drops. Install a back pressure valve after the meter. Keep at least 0.3 to 0.5 bar back pressure.

Wear changes K factor too. Gears and rotors wear after long service. Calibration corrects for minor wear. If the error is above 5 percent, inspect the measuring chamber first.
