How a Transit Time Ultrasonic Flow Meter Works

Two transducers send ultrasound pulses through the pipe wall and into the liquid. One pulse travels downstream. The other travels upstream. The downstream pulse moves slightly faster. The meter measures this time difference. A larger difference means higher flow. This method demands a clean acoustic path. Bubbles or solids scatter the signal and the meter goes into fault mode.


Typical liquids are treated water, chemicals, ultrapure water, glycol, diesel, and edible oils. We have supplied transit time clamp-on meters for a pharmaceutical water injection loop in Indonesia. Pipe size was DN40, flow range 200 to 2000 kg/h. The meter gave ±0.5% repeatability right out of the box.


How a Doppler Ultrasonic Flow Meter Works

A Doppler meter also clamps on the outside of the pipe. It sends a continuous ultrasound beam into the liquid. The beam reflects off particles or bubbles moving with the flow. The frequency shift shows the flow velocity. More reflectors give a stronger signal. Without enough reflectors the meter outputs zero or jumps around randomly.


We recommend Doppler for raw sewage, dredging slurry, mining tailings, activated sludge, and pulp stock above 2% consistency. Last year a palm oil mill in Sabah, Malaysia, used our Doppler meter on a DN150 pipe carrying crude palm oil with high sediment. Fluid temperature was 55°C. The meter ran for 11 months without cleaning or recalibration.


Key Differences Engineers Care About

Accuracy is the first split. Transit time can reach ±0.5% of reading under good conditions. Doppler usually stays around ±2% to ±5% of full scale because the particle velocity profile is less stable. If you dose chemicals or need billing grade numbers, transit time wins.


Minimum solids load matters a lot. Transit time works below 0.1% suspended solids by volume. Doppler needs between 0.02% and 10% solids. Below 0.02% the signal weakens. Above 10% the ultrasound attenuates too much. We saw this on a starch slurry line in Thailand. Pipe material and liner also play a role. Transit time passes through metal, plastic, and concrete pipes with no inner coating. Doppler struggles if the pipe liner absorbs sound, like loose rubber liners. Both types need the pipe full. Partial pipes give false low readings.

Can I use a transit time meter on wastewater if I filter it first?
No. Filtration removes the particles but the meter is already the wrong choice. A Doppler meter measures the raw stream directly and costs less to maintain.


Do I need straight pipe runs for clamp-on ultrasonic meters?
Yes. Transit time needs 10D upstream and 5D downstream. Doppler is more tolerant and often works with 5D upstream. A 90° elbow too close creates swirl that confuses the transit time algorithm.
