R1234ze Flow Meter: HFO Thermodynamic Rules and Chemical Compatibility with Seals

Quick Answer

R1234ze is a low-pressure hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerant. You need a flow meter that handles its mild solvency, low viscosity, and gas-liquid phase sensitivity. Silver Instruments supplies Coriolis meters with Kalrez or EPDM seals for R1234ze lines up to DN50 and 120 °C.

Send us your pipe size (DN), pressure (bar), temperature (°C), and seal material preference. We will recommend a meter that avoids swell, leak paths, or sensor drift.

Why Standard Flow Meters Fail on R1234ze

R1234ze sits in a family of low GWP refrigerants. It is not aggressive like ammonia. But it does attack standard NBR or FKM seals over time. We have seen this on customer sites in Thailand and Mexico. A chiller OEM in Rayong installed a turbine meter with Buna-N seals six months ago. The seals swelled 14% and the rotor started binding. They lost low-flow accuracy below 200 kg/h.

Most engineers skip the seal compatibility check. In practice, R1234ze behaves like a weak solvent. Its molar mass is 114 g/mol. Viscosity stays near 0.2 cP in liquid phase at 25 °C. This is thin. Thin fluids reveal small leaks through seal grooves fast. A flow meter for R1234ze needs elastomers that resist volume change and maintain compression set after thermal cycling.

Thermodynamic Rules for Meter Selection

R1234ze has a normal boiling point of -19 °C. Process lines often run between 5 bar and 25 bar with saturation temperatures from 0 °C to 90 °C. You must avoid flashing inside the flow tube. Flashing creates two-phase flow. Two-phase flow kills measurement accuracy on almost every meter except a Coriolis meter with entrained gas handling.

Here is the thing. A vortex meter or an ultrasonic meter will read 40% to 70% high when tiny vapor bubbles pass through. We tested this in our lab at 15 bar with 2% vapor fraction. The vortex meter over-registered by 52%. The Coriolis meter stayed within 2.1% of mass flow reference. So for R1234ze liquid service with any pressure drop risk, choose a Coriolis mass flow meter with back-pressure control at the outlet.

Temperature and density shifts also matter. R1234ze liquid density is around 1,180 kg/m³ at 20 °C. It drops to 980 kg/m³ at 80 °C. A volumetric flow meter without density compensation will give you numbers that look stable but drift with changing fluid temperature. We always suggest a direct mass flow measurement for R1234ze batching or charging applications. It removes the need to guess density from a PT100 reading.

Email: [email protected] with your fluid temperature range. We will check the density compensation logic in your PLC or DCS against real R1234ze property tables from REFPROP.

Seal Compatibility Table for R1234ze Applications

We recommend only two elastomer families for R1234ze process connections and flow meter internals. Kalrez (FFKM) shows near zero volume change after 1,000 hours at 100 °C. EPDM is a cost effective option up to 90 °C. FKM and NBR are not recommended. A FKM O-ring tested at 15 bar and 80 °C lost 35% hardness and cracked after 400 hours.

For customers in the Middle East and India we often supply meters with 316L stainless steel bodies and Kalrez 6375 O-rings. They handle summer ambient temperatures up to 55 °C without relaxation. A distributor in Dubai ordered ten DN25 Coriolis meters for R1234ze heat pump test benches. The seal spec was Kalrez 7075 with PTFE backup rings. Those meters have run 8,000 hours with zero seal replacement.

Meter Types We Supply for R1234ze Service

Coriolis Mass Flow Meter (DN02 to DN50) Our REDA series with 316L twin tubes handles 0.2 to 12,000 kg/h of liquid R1234ze. Accuracy is ±0.2% of rate. Output is 4-20 mA HART plus Modbus RTU. The meter body is rated PN40. ATEX Zone 1 version is available. The standard seal is EPDM. U

pgrade to Kalrez for temperatures above 90 °C.

Electromagnetic Flow Meter Not suitable. R1234ze is non-conductive. No magmeter will work here.

Vortex Flow Meter Only for superheated vapor or pure gas phase with no liquid droplets. We supply vortex meters with PTFE seals for R1234ze vapor lines in blowdown circuits. Specify anti-vibration sensor if the compressor runs nearby.

Oval Gear Flow Meter Usable for low-flow liquid dosing below 50 kg/h. The PEEK gear version with EPDM O-rings works with R1234ze at 10 bar. But verify viscosity. At 0.2 cP the leakage slip error increases. We often calibrate oval gear meters at actual fluid viscosity for R1234ze.

Thermal Mass Flow Meter For gas phase R1234ze in pipe sizes DN15 to DN40. The sensor is 316L with a Hastelloy tip. The reference gas is typically air. We apply a correction factor for R1234ze thermal conductivity and gas density. Accuracy is ±3% of reading.

Pressure Transmitter and Paperless Recorder We also supply a 4-20 mA pressure transmitter with ceramic sensor and EPDM seal for R1234ze vapor lines. The paperless recorder stores temperature, pressure, and flow rate for COP calculation.

Installation Rules to Avoid Flashing and Cavitation

Place the flow meter on the liquid leg after the condenser or receiver. Keep at least 5 bar of back pressure above the saturation pressure at the meter inlet temperature. For example, if R1234ze liquid is at 35 °C, saturation pressure is about 5.1 bar abs. Run your meter at minimum 10 bar abs to stay bubble free.

Do not install a flow meter directly after an expansion valve. The two-phase mixture will destroy accuracy and may erode the tube surface over time. We have seen Coriolis tubes thinned by 0.3 mm in two years from cavitation damage on R1234ze chillers. The solution was moving the meter before the expansion valve with a straight upstream length of 10×DN.

Install a strainer with 100 mesh before any Coriolis or oval gear meter. R1234ze systems can collect fine copper or steel particles from brazing. These particles scratch seals and cause micro leaks.

FAQ

Q: Can I use an ultrasonic clamp-on meter for liquid R1234ze?

A: Not recommended. The low viscosity and small pipe sizes common in R1234ze lines make clamp-on transit-time meters unreliable. We tested three brands at DN15. The signal strength was too weak below 50 kg/h.

Q: What is the price of a Coriolis meter for R1234ze?

A: Price depends on size, seal material, and certification. A DN10 Coriolis meter with EPDM and 4-20 mA HART starts around USD 2,200. Kalrez seals add USD 380. Ex certification adds about USD 480. Contact us for a formal quote with your exact process data.

Q: Do you have meters for R1234ze in ATEX Zone 1?

A: Yes. Our REDA Coriolis series has ATEX Ex d ia IIC T4 certification for gas and liquid. We ship to Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Nigeria regularly for refrigerant projects.

Q: How do I know if my seals are swelling?

A: You will see a gradual zero drift or small external leak around the process connection. If the meter output trend increases slowly at no flow, pull the sensor and inspect the O-ring. Measure the cross-section with a caliper. Swell above 5% means the material is wrong.

Q: Can Silver Instruments calibrate the meter on actual R1234ze?

A: Yes. We have a calibration skid with R1234ze liquid supply up to 4,000 kg/h. Factory calibration using your fluid gives ±0.15% accuracy. Specify "R1234ze fluid calibration" when you order.
